Not even on my map!

Growing up in southeastern Pennsylvania I did the majority of my trout fishing in the small streams in and around Lancaster County and focused my efforts greatly on the many streams in and around Centre county in State College PA. Trout fishing was always a strong part of my fishing repertoire however with the Susquehanna River in my back yard, warm water fishing was not only accessible but remained a great focus of my efforts and ultimately supported my livelihood while living in the area. Various fishing road trips often led to other fishery addictions that included migrating stripers to the upper Chesapeake Bay as well as steelhead and salmon to the various great lake tributaries.IMG_4193   (more…)

Virginia Fly and Wine Festival

IMG_0928 IMG_0945 Throughout most of my adult professional life I have had the unique pleasure of working trade shows. If you have ever attended a trade show you have seen the many smiling faces standing behind their respective tables, in their booths anxious to offer you a key fob, refrigerator magnet or some other kind of swag to remind you of who they are and what they do. Shows like these can be exciting for the folks that work them, at least at the beginning of the show however most are anxious to pack up and hit the road long before the show is actually over, usually on Sunday night. Most folks working these shows are friendly types however working a show all day on your feet often having conversations with patrons that are only engaged long enough to get that free mini box of Chiclets on the booth table would make anyone tire of the event itself and want to go on with the normal daily lives. Not- The Duber Knot.

A few years ago while working at the Orvis Store in Richmond Virginia I was approached by a gentleman from the Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers and asked if I would join his group for a meeting and speak to them about fly fishing for small mouth bass. Smallies are near and dear to me as I grew up fishing the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and eventually spent much of the first half of my guiding years chasing them with clients. What I found interesting about this request is that the VCFA is coastal, out of Virginia Beach and most of it’s members spend their time fishing for reds, stripers and blues in that area. “We would just like to hear about a different fish and fishery from a guest speaker” it was explained to me. So I agreed to make the trek from Richmond to VA beach (about a 2 hour drive) sometime later that spring.
